Mālama Mānoa took a significant step to increase shade, diminish glare, and make our island healthier when we hosted our fifth 1000 Tree Giveaway Sunday, April 29, 2012 at the Mānoa Valley District Park Pavilion. It was a tree-mendous success! 500 people attended and we gave away 1200 plants within hours. This year’s featured plant was kalo grown by Mālama Mānoa President, Pat Chung. Andy Cole and the Honolulu Woodturners were there for demonstrations and showed us how to use wood from fallen trees. Boy Scouts from Troop #1 were there in force to help carry trees for happy recipients. Arborists and landscapers Dudley Hulbert, Heidi Bornhorst and Andrew Kendall answered questions all morning! Sunrise Rotary members were instrumental in the success of the day also. Many thanks to co-chairs Jeremy Lam, Maile Au-Kauai and Ahni Stephens and their hard-working committee for presenting this popular event!
